YOUR KILLER IS…
Great Artists Steal
When's the last time you consumed material in your medium? If you make short horror films, what's the last short horror film you saw? If you write SciFi, what's the last science fiction book you read?
You should be regularly consuming art in your medium.
It will offer you inspiration, give you an idea what others are making, and teach you about what you want out of your own art compared to others.
Action Plan
List three works in your medium and genre that are immensely popular, critically lauded, or historically significant (or just very very interesting to you).
Read/watch/visit all three.
Take notes while experiencing the things on your list. Think hard about what the creator is doing. How are they affecting mood? What techniques are they using?
Make art like you stole it.
For bonus points, try to make something in the style of each of the things on your list.
For example, if you watch a movie and really like the screenwriter's style, try to write a scene in their style. This will help you absorb the lessons of their work and figure out what will fit well with your own style.
Or... help you figure out your own style in the first place!
